Description
Course Overview:
The Advanced Life Support Level 1 (ALS1) course equips health professionals with the knowledge, skills and confidence to recognise and manage patient deterioration, perform effective resuscitation, and respond decisively in the critical early stages of a medical emergency.
Accredited by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC), this one-day program is designed for clinicians who need more advanced skills than those taught in Basic Life Support (BLS), but who do not require the comprehensive two-day ARC Advanced Life Support Level 2 (ALS2) course.
Delivered by experienced St John WA clinical educators, ALS1 combines evidence-based instruction with immersive, hands-on simulation. Participants will strengthen their ability to assess and stabilise deteriorating patients, perform life-saving interventions, and work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary resuscitation team.
What You Will Learn:
The course includes:
• Recognition and initial management of the critically ill patient using the ABCDE approach
• Early identification of patient deterioration using observation charts and early warning scores
• Basic life support for adults, children, and infants (including CPR and choking management)
• Defibrillation skills using manual and/or automated external defibrillators (AEDs)
• Airway management using adjuncts (OPA/NPA) and oxygen therapy
• Patient assessment and monitoring to detect and respond to clinical changes
• Structured handover using the ISBAR communication framework
• Cardiac arrest management in accordance with the ARC ALS algorithm
• Understanding common causes of cardiopulmonary arrest and strategies for prevention
• Participation as an active member of the resuscitation team
For additional information please visit the ALS1 - Advanced Life Support Level 1 training page.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive an Australian Resuscitation Council ALS1 certificate valid for 4 years. It is recommended that these skills are updated annually.
