Clinical Hours

It is a mandatory requirement of the HLT41120 Certificate IV in Health Care qualification for students to complete a minimum of 80 clinical hours with practical experience in a clinical setting, under clinical supervision.
Students will need to complete the 80 clinical hours after attending and meeting the requirements of the in-class training component.
It is the responsibility of the students to secure a suitable workplace that will enable them to complete the required clinical hours.
Option one
Own Workplace or External Provider
Students may complete a minimum of 80 supervised clinical hours in their own approved workplace or in another suitable clinical setting. Hours may be completed in either a paid or volunteer role, providing valuable real‑world experience aligned with training package requirements.
Option two
St John WA Volunteering
Students may apply to complete clinical hours through St John WA Volunteering”. This process is separate from qualification enrolment, and subject to volunteer eligibility and operational availability across metropolitan and regional WA.   • Step 1: Submit Your Application - Complete the application form (download below) and email it to us at qualifications@stjohnwa.com.au.
  • Step 2: Provide Some Details - Ensure you have a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI). Complete the Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) skills assessment provided during the application process.
  • Step 3: Secure Your Enrolment - Once your application is confirmed, pay the $1,500 deposit to secure your place in the course and officially become a St John WA student.
  • Step 4: Begin Your Learning - Access the online Learning Management System and complete required pre-learning quizzes to prepare for your face-to-face training sessions.

Unfortunately, no. The 10 days of face-to-face training must be attended consecutively over a two-week period (Monday to Friday, Week 1 and Week 2).

This is a requirement to ensure learning continuity and competency assessment integrity.
Graduates of the HLT41120 Certificate IV in Health Care may be eligible to apply for roles such as:

Please note that employment opportunities may also depend on employer requirements and additional training or experience.
No, this qualification does not qualify you to work as a Paramedic.

However, it is an excellent pathway into Paramedicine, particularly for individuals new to the health or emergency services industry. It provides foundational clinical skills, industry exposure, and experience that can support future study at a diploma or university level.
You are required to attend:
  • 10 days of face-to-face training
  • Delivered over two consecutive weeks (Monday to Friday)
All other components are completed through online learning and clinical hours.
Not necessarily. While the course has a maximum duration of 12 months, many students complete it sooner.

Completion time depends on:

If you don't already have a suitable workplace to complete the clinical hours, you may be able to complete them through St John WA volunteering.

  • Volunteering with Regional Volunteer Ambulance teams*
