Public School Defibrillator Mandate
In the heart of every school lies the commitment to safety and wellbeing. Starting from the 15th of November 2023, the Department of Education has rolled out the mandate of installation of Automated External Defibrillators in all public schools by 30 June 2024.
As the Department of Education embraces the critical need for defibrillators in all public schools, St John WA offers a range of defibrillators, signage, and training designed to keep students, staff, and the broader community safe.

Primary & K-Y12 Schools
St John WA recommends equipping primary and K-Y12 schools with the ZOLL AED 3 Defibrillator. This defibrillator features universal pads that can be used on children or adults without requiring separate paediatric pads.

Senior Schools

AED ReadyPack
The St John AED ReadyPack is designed to be kept next to a defibrillator and contains the essential equipment needed to prepare a patient before using the device.
Pack contains:
- • Gloves for the responder
- • Reusable resuscitation face mask for CPR
- • Shears to remove clothing
- • Disposable razor to remove chest hair
- • Alcohol swabs to wipe away dirt
- • Gauze swabs to dry or wipe area
Signage, Cabinets and Products
The mandate requires that the defibrillator be installed outside the school administration building to ensure that immediate accessibility is ensured during emergencies. They must comply with Australian Standards, be registered, and be positioned for optimal performance considering environmental conditions.

Defibrillator Registration
If your school has an internal defibrillator available during operating hours, or an external defibrillator available 24/7, we urge you to register your device on our Community First Responder network. The network is designed to make it easier for the community to access a defibrillator quickly during the critical moments before an ambulance arrives. Together, we can help to improve cardiac arrest survival rates.
