Course Overview:
Designed for health professionals working in clinical or emergency care environments, this course provides the practical skills and confidence to perform intravenous (IV) cannulation safely and effectively.
Delivered by experienced clinical educators, the IV Cannulation Skills course combines online learning with immersive, simulation-based training. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of vein anatomy, aseptic technique, and equipment selection while developing hands-on proficiency in cannula insertion and management.
This course is suited to recent health graduates, nurses, paramedics, and allied health professionals looking to build or enhance their vascular access skills.

What You Will Learn:
The course includes:
Anatomical Assessment: Identify and assess veins to select the most suitable IV insertion site.
Aseptic Cannulation: Insert and secure IV cannulas using safe, aseptic, non-touch techniques.
Device Selection: Match cannula type and size to patient needs and clinical requirements.
Complication Management: Prevent and manage common IV issues, supporting infection control and vein preservation.
Troubleshooting Skills: Confidently handle difficult cannulations using frameworks such as the DIVAS tool.
Assessment Tools: Use the PIVAS tool to assess IV access before administration.

Certification:
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Course Duration and Delivery:
• 3 hours of in-class training and 2 hours of online learning
• Delivered through face-to-face instruction and online learning

Physical Fitness:
A basic level of physical fitness is required, as the course includes floor-based activities. Reasonable adjustments are available.
Participants should also have adequate upper body mobility and dexterity (including movement of wrists, fingers and elbows) to perform cannulation and related procedures safely during practical training.

Pre-requisites:
Participants must have an understanding of clinical terminology and healthcare practices.

This course is suited but not limited to:
• Enrolled or Registered Nurses
• Paramedics or Medics
• Certificate III or IV trained healthcare workers
• Recent Health Graduates

Participants should also have adequate upper body mobility and dexterity (including movement of wrists, fingers and elbows) to perform cannulation and related procedures safely during practical training.
