Heading off to explore our state? A little preparation will help you make the most of it, wherever you end up. Check and replenish your first aid kit;
Before you set off, ensure you have a well-stocked first aid kit. It should include:
- bandages, antiseptics, and wound dressings
- emergency thermal blankets and burn treatment
- snake bite kits (especially in remote areas)
- a basic first aid manual
Remember to tailor your kit to your adventure. Hiking, camping, and beach trips may require different supplies to a road trip or a fishing expedition. Always check for expired items and restock accordingly.
Know first aid essentials
Complete a First Aid course before your trip. You can choose courses focused on children's first aid, basic first aid, or take one of St John WA's free online First Aid for Me refreshers. If you're travelling with young children, knowing CPR, choking management, and how to treat burns and other common injuries is essential.
Get the St John WA First Responder App
This free app has first aid guides and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) locations across WA, and lets you register as a Community First Responder (CFR).
Consider an AED
Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at any time. An AED can mean the difference between life and death. Sudden cardiac arrest survival rates increase almost three-fold when an AED is used promptly, and portable AEDs are lightweight, compact, and ideal for travel.

Have a check-up
Being up to date with general health checks can reduce the need for care on the road. Before extended travel, schedule check-ups with your GP, dentist, and optometrist. St John WA has six dental, GP and urgent care centres that can help. Make sure you have any prescription medication and take a copy of your medical history.
