Becoming an Academy Team Leader is an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young people. The St John Academy provides a fun, supportive environment where young people aged 12–17 can build friendships, develop leadership skills, and grow their first aid knowledge.

As a Team Leader, you play a key role in guiding and mentoring Academy members, helping them gain confidence, learn valuable life skills, and reach their potential. What your role involves

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, organise and monitor the Academy Division activities
  • Attend Academy Divisional meetings, and other meetings as required
  • Ensure a safe working environment for self and others by championing the Child Safe Code of Conduct

Expectations

  • Attend a minimum of 4 division nights per term
  • Support the Division Lead in preparing activities and lesson plans
  • Stay up to date with all Academy Guidelines, Policies and Procedures

Skills required

Essential Requirements

  • Working With Children Check (WWCC) – if you don’t have one, St John can assist you with the application process
  • National Police Clearance (NPC)
  • Provide First Aid Certificate

Desirable Requirements

  • First Aid for Mental Health
  • Current C class driver’s licence

Personal Attributes

  • Strong capability to communicate and lead in accordance with established protocols
  • Capacity to be adaptable and flexible and to solve problems in order to achieve results
  • Exceptional time management skills
  • Well-developed communication skills

The application process

  • Step 1 - Complete application
  • Step 2 - Complete an online interview
  • Step 3 - Provide 1 reference
  • Step 4 - Apply for WWCC and NPC
  • Step 5 - Provide all documentation

The onboarding process

  • Complete Advanced Child Safeguarding training
  • Complete mandatory organisational training
  • Complete Provide First Aid course (1-day course provided by St John) or submit evidence of current certification (must be less than 12 months since date of issue)
  • Attend Welcome Induction via Microsoft Teams (approximately 1 hour)

 

Skills you will develop

As an Academy Team Leader you will develop your leadership, management, communication, planning and peer and youth coaching and mentoring skills.

You will gain a wider knowledge and understanding of St John WA and Academy guidelines, policies and procedures. All skills developed could assist with any applications with St John WA.

Required documentation

To become a volunteer with St John Ambulance Western Australia, you will be asked to complete an online application, including a medical questionnaire and the following:

  • National Police Clearance (Valid within the past 6 months)
  • Current Photo ID (Driver’s Licence, Passport or WA Photo/Proof of Age Card)
  • Working with Children Check
Ongoing training

All our volunteers are provided with the necessary training to enable them to carry out their role. To continue to operate in your role, you must maintain the competencies required and an appropriate level of fitness as roles are physically demanding.

Confidentiality

All information concerning our volunteers is treated as strictly confidential at all times.

Expenses

Your volunteering for St John Ambulance should not cost you anything. We will reimburse all legitimate out of pocket expenses incurred during your time volunteering with us. You should talk to your supervisor to confirm what expenses you can claim.

St John Ambulance has a long history of recognising the outstanding contributions volunteers make to the organisation. We seek to recognise all volunteers and there are a number of distinguished national awards that you can be eligible for including our internal reward and recognition program.

Workplace Behaviour Policy

Volunteers at St John are expected to abide by the work place behaviour policy and relevant procedures. The policy and procedures are available for view on the intranet.

Safety Injury & Support Services

Volunteers will be informed of the Occupational Safety and Health requirements applicable to volunteers. Safety Injury and Support Services provide extensive information about their services and policies on the intranet.

Wellbeing & Support Services

St John places a very high value on the health and wellbeing of their volunteers and provides an extensive support network through its confidential Wellbeing and Support program, accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
